Canon EOS R8 and R50 mirrorless cameras arrive in India: Features, price

Canon announced the EOS R8, a new entry-level full-frame camera that equips many powerful video and still-shooting features from its bigger sibling, the EOS R6 Mark II. It includes Canon Log 3 and up to 40 frames per second of continuous shooting, with the portability of the EOS RP. The company also unveiled its EOS R50, a new compact, lightweight APS-C mirrorless camera that will replace the EOS M50 Mark II.

The new cameras include a plethora of fun, creative tools and automatic functions that enable users to make high-quality vlogs and photographs with minimal camera control.

Along with the new cameras, the company also expanded its RF lens portfolio with the new RF24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and RF-S55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM. Let’s take a closer look at Canon’s latest offerings.

Canon EOS R8 Features and Specifications

The Canon EOS R8 flaunts a 24.2 megapixels Full-frame CMOS sensor with DIGIC X image processing. It offers up to 40 fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter. The camera is equipped with Movie Digital IS, which digitally performs tilt correction and 5-axis image stabilization during video shooting. Hence stable handheld videos can be ensured even with lenses with no optical image stabilization (Optical IS). The camera can acquire focus as fast as 0.03 seconds.

Moreover, the Canon ROS R8 allows you to shoot 4K UHD footage up to 60p. It also has heat suppression measures which enable you to shoot up to 4K 30p with no recording time restriction and up to 30 minutes at 4K 60p.

Along with standard 8-bit recording, the Canon EOS R8 provides two options for 10-bit 4:2:2 high dynamic range video recording. When viewed on an HDR display, HDR PQ gives excellent dynamic range and stunning colours right out of the camera. Meanwhile, Canon Log 3 provides the same degree of information, not “baked-in,” providing greater flexibility for heavier post-processing workflows like colour grading.

Canon EOS R50 Features and Specifications

The Canon EOS R50 flaunts a 24.2 megapixels APS-C CMOS sensor with DIGIC X image processing. It offers up to 15 fps continuous shooting with an electronic shutter. It is the first entry-level EOS-series APS-C Mirrorless Camera which can shoot 6K-oversampled uncropped 4K UHD videos. The Canon EOS R50 is designed for vlogging and weighs only 375 grams.

The Canon EOS R50 also features two Movie IS (Image Stabilizer)[5] modes (‘Enhanced’ and ‘On’) that digitally conduct 5-axis camera shake correction, which is enhanced when used with an RF lens with in-lens IS.

Price and Availability

The Canon EOS R8 costs $1,499 (body only), roughly Rs 1,25,000, and the R50 costs $680 (body only), around Rs 55,000. The Indian pricing of the latest cameras is yet to be announced. However, the cameras are already listed on the Canon India website, so we can expect the prices to be announced soon.

If the new Canon EOS R8 and R50 are priced similarly in India, it has the potential to become the best bang for your buck mirrorless camera.
